Throughout its history many have referred to slavery as America’s “original sin.” While not all believe that this abhorrent institution, bad as it was, is deserving of this moniker, the term is a powerful and useful one — for it hints at deep, insidious faults which though often overlooked, to this day have contributed heavily to the contraction of the American mind and the corrosion of its culture.
